Brief history :

Anderkilla Shahi Jamey mosque, Chittangong was established in 1967 a.c during the reign of Mughal empire. At that time the muslims of Chittagong suffered inhumenely in hands of Moghs & Portuguese pirates. The Grate Mughal emperor Shahen shah Alamgir Aurangajib appointed Nawab Shaista Khan to conquer Chittagong. Nawab’s son Bujurg Umed Khan was ordered to proceed to chittagong. Umed Khan defeated the Moghs. The Moghs fled away. Shahen Shah Alamgir received the news of the victory with great joy and gratitude to Allah. A shahi forman or order was issued to name chittagong as Islamabad.Instruction were given to raise memorials for this momentous event. Accordingly Bujurg Umed Khan to commemorate this victory over the Moghs did built this Shahi Jamey Mosque at Anderkilla.

The foundation of the mosque is an important landmark of the muslim conquest of this forntier district form Arakans & Portugues pairates. The name Anderkilla means “ Inner port” and the mosque is the symbol of the Muslim Truimph over the hostiles. The Nawab and his worthy son, Bujurg Umed Khan dedicated huge properties to the maintenance of the mosque and the attached madrasa.

With the passing of India in to British colonial rule, the then British East India Company turned the mosque into a Magazin for arms and ammunitions. In 1856 Hamidullah Khan incorporate the Lakheraj properties of the mosque in to the body of his own properties. About 106 years the properties of the mosque was illegaly enrolled in to the waqf properties. In 1962 a committee was set leading by the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong for to look after the mosque.
